Understanding The Cost Of Lasik Surgery

Lasik eye correction surgery is one of the most popular long-term methods to correct faulty vision without traditional surgical tools and risks. However, the very fact that the technique uses lasers instead of those traditional tools makes the cost of Lasik surgery more than many people can afford.

The cost of Lasik surgery is based on each individual case and the technique that is performed. Different techniques such as Wavefront, IntraLase and Epi-Lasik are all slightly different and require different methods. Ultimately, costs are determined per eye depending on which is chosen by your doctor.

Price ranges in 2007 run from $2,000 an eye to $500 an eye when specials are running. However, be very careful when responding to 'sales' on eye care, as your eyes are more valuable than money. Very few Lasik procedures are done for less than $1,000, so be wary of offers that come too cheap. Remember, you get what you pay for. This is not to say that any offer of a lower price should be avoided. Just do your research, check with locals and if you want to be really safe, check with the appropriate regulating boards for eye surgeons and eye surgery centers in your area when checking on the cost of Lasik surgery.

Many Lasik eye centers, including LasikPlus and TLC Laser Eye Centers offer competitive prices, but as with procedure, location has much to do with the cost of Lasik surgery. Unfortunately, the closer you live to a large city, the more you'll likely pay for this type of surgery. Despite the use of non-invasive lasers in the Lasik procedure, remember that Lasik eye vision correction is a surgery. While most of these procedures take less than fifteen minutes per eye and can be performed on an outpatient basis, you will be paying for the best in medical technological development.

The cost of Lasik surgery usually consists of preoperative testing and screenings, but always make sure ahead of time. Always make sure, when quoted a price that you feel comfortable that you will be properly screened and examined with eye tracking equipment and that measurement of your cornea and its thickness will be taken before the surgery. Some Lasik surgeries have better results on people with thinner corneal tissues, so you may want to inquire about that during the consultation with your doctor.

Keep in mind, since this is surgery, that you will also be billed, in your quote, for the use of the laser equipment per eye, plus surgical precautions such as gowns, gloves, masks and other sterile items needed for your surgery, including the microkeratome blades, and the surgical solutions and medications that your doctor will use during your surgery. The cost of Lasik surgery also includes a portion of the overhead costs of running the doctor's office and most especially, your doctor's fee. Be aware also that most vision care plans do not cover Lasik eye surgery, as many of them consider it a cosmetic option.
